5 Awesome Geeky Videos

Well, back to work.  Staycation is over.  However, here are the top five geeky videos OF ALL TIME!  Well, actually, just for today … and really, for 4PM.  And only from my point of view.  Other than that, though, these are the top five geeky videos OF ALL TIME!

Alright, Marvel’s The Avengers has crested /beginDrEvilImpression one billion dollars /endDrEvilImpression so, y’know, that went well.  However, in yet another Year of the Superhero, we still have a few more flicks to go.  Here are four minutes with Peter Parker, which are an awesome four minutes except that they don’t include enough Emma Stone.  To be honest, despite my inherent crankery about unnecessary reboots, I’m starting to warm up to this makeover, True Believers.

There is nothing geeks and nerds enjoy more than bowling.  Well, except video games, conventions, movies, comic books, books, books about video games, movies about comic books, video game conventions, comic books about video games, video games about movies, music made for books, comic book conventions, movies about video games, the internet, television shows, movies about television shows, books about television shows, movies about television shows about toys, et al, latin, etc.

Other than that, though, bowling!

Speaking of web videos about video games about books, here are twenty minutes of trope-filled awesomeness.  Although there are a handful of clichés here, the ambiance and action are really good.  They’ve otherwise written a tight story which escalates nicely into a situation where the stakes are higher than expected.  Also, they blow shit up.

Now, we turn to video games inspired by the ambiance of comic books, novels, and movies set in the gritty film noir of the city detective.  The original Max Payne was a landmark video game, not just for its rendition of ‘bullet time’ but because it really upped the ante in terms of video game storytelling.  The second one was pretty good, too, though I think it suffered a little from similaritis.  Nonetheless, 95% of great is still pretty good.  The movie starring Mark Wahlberg was, for me, a bit of a letdown.  It lacked verve and overreached in its gravitas.  However, seeing this trailer for Max Payne 3, which is made up of entirely in-game footage, has restored my faith in the faithless one.

And, finally, ending as we began, with a movie about a comic book, I cannot ignore the looming end of possibly the best comic book movie franchise of all time — seriously.  Christopher Nolan’s Batman triptych will have the final piece of the puzzle released this summer.  As a longtime Whedonite, I loved The Avengers but it was Whedon Light.  Tasted great, but less filling.  Just watch Dollhouse or “The Body” episode of Buffy the Vampire SlayerThe Avengers was a gigantic machine and, really, a pit trap which Joss Whedon successfully navigated but it’s not his best work.  The Dark Knight trilogy is Christopher Nolan at his best.  After delivering solid ‘in-betweeners’ like The Prestige and Inception, I’m both sad to see his near-elegiac vision of Gotham City go and excited to know this frees him to craft more of his original pieces.

Sidebar: Anne Hathaway, despite her famed perky personality, has always hinted at a dark and melancholy side.  She’s all smiles and bright eyes but even in her happiest of interviews there’s something deeply sad inside of her.  Or, perhaps, angry.  The geekworld is all atwixt and atwitter about the ramifications of Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Bane, the central villain, but I’m more excited and intrigued by how Hathaway’s Jungian personality will fit into the Catsuit.

I suspect she will surprise.  And delightfully so.

Anyway, as Walter Bishop once said: Peace out!

    • Strange. I tested them all. If you click on the YouTube logo (bottom right) it will open the videos on their native YouTube pages. If they don’t play after that, then I canna help ya.

  3. Nice Angelo. Now I know I am also a certified geek…without combat skills. I was very iffy on the spidey re-do (of sorts) however that trailer actually made look better. Thanks for sharing. And making me realize (okay, okay, remind me) that I am a geek *sigh*
